Home Insurance

What is home insurance?

Home insurance is insurance for your home, and looks after both the structure of your home and it’s contents, depending on your needs.

Home insurance is made up of two different forms of insurance product, contents insurance and buildings insurance, and not all customers will need both parts of the insurance product.

Types of home insurance

There are two different parts of home insurance, and some customers will choose to take just contents insurance, and others will take both contents insurance and buildings insurance.

The buildings insurance part of home insurance looks after the structure of the home, and the building itself. Buildings insurance is essential for the person responsible for the building, usually the homeowner.

People who will not need the buildings insurance aspect of home insurance include those who are renting their home, as it is the landlords responsibility to insure the building, and those who own their home, but only through a leasehold, as it is usually the freeholders responsibility to insure the building.

Buildings cover looks after the structure of the home, and any outbuildings, including a shed and garage, and any fences, gates, walls or structures on the properties land. It also covers any fixed structures within the home, including the kitchen units and worktop, and the bathroom suites, as well as any built in wardrobes or cupboards.

The contents insurance element of home insurance looks after the contents of the home, and includes your carpets, furniture, clothes, shoes, electrical equipment and anything else in your home that is not fixed down.

When people take out content insurance as part of their home insurance policy, they often have to do so with a contents limit. It is really important to try to accurately estimate the value of the contents in your home, and this is often one of the most underestimated parts of insurance in the UK.

The wardrobe is one of the worst areas for this, because it usually contains clothes accumulated over many years. Insurers advise that customer calculate a room at a time, and think about the current day cost of replacing an item when working it out.

Contents insurance can also include accidental damage cover for contents of your home. Home insurance protects against flooding and water damage as a result of leaked pipes, or extreme weather, flood damage, fire, theft and vandalism.
